- Author Meggan Hill and Photographer Susan M. Graunke are both moms.
- Meggan has young children and particularly loves when a book would really excite her children and holds all their attention. She wanted to try and duplicate that same sense of wonder while writing a story about a specific character trait.
- Meggan stated, "Susan and I wanted to try and give families and schools a book that would offer teachable moments and start discussions on what kindness means."
- Susan M. Graunke initially attempted to photograph Nico and Lola with a set plan. But she quickly learned she was along for the ride as she clicked away capturing her vivid and bright photographs. Susan said, "Nico and Lola had their own agenda. It was exciting to try and be in the right place at exactly the right time with those two who were always on the go."
- Kindness is an abstract concept for children to grasp, and can be difficult to understand.
- In this unique children's book, filled with photographs, Nico and Lola not only holds children's interest, but this story shows and tells them exactly what kindness means. "Each page draws out a conclusion on the character trait of kindness."
- Secondarily Nico and Lola is an excellent book to use when introducing a pet into your home.
- We love getting the feedback on the book like when a child closes up Nico and Lola and asks, "Mom, was I kind today?" Maybe sometime we will hear that an adult closed the book and thought, "You know, I could have been a little kinder today." That would really be icing on the cake for this story.
